Welcome to my first newsletter for Term 1 2009 (Careers Newsletter)

Welcome back students! I hope you are all ready for an exciting 2009. I have a feeling this is going to be a great year.

This newsletter is designed to help students, parents and teachers have up-to-date information about;

Students are always welcome in my office.  I will normally endeavour to pause what I am doing and address any issues that you wish to discuss, however, I recommend an appointment be made for issues that may take some time to talk about. I would also ask, that if you need to see me during class time, you get teacher permission first.

Parents are also welcome to come and see me, however an appointment must be made. This can be done by telephone on 94515111 or you may email me with any questions or to book an appointment on christopher.mansell@det.nsw.edu.au




University news (Careers Newsletter)

Special Message For Year 10 Students (Careers Newsletter)

All Year 10 students are expected to do a one week work experience during week six, term four at the end of this year. I will be following up with more details, however, I encourage students to start thinking about what they would like to do. I hope that you can find something exciting and interesting and not leave it too late to start organising.

 

The Northern Sydney Central Coast NSW Health is offering work experience at the Royal North Shore Hospital. The closing date for applications is Friday 27 February. If you wish to take advantage of this offer, come and see me ASAP for more details.

Sound Technician


Alternative Titles: Audio Engineer

Description

Sound technicians operate technical equipment to amplify, enhance, record, mix or reproduce sound in support of performing arts, and may also assemble and maintain sound equipment.

A sound technician may perform the following tasks:

  • determine sound requirements
  • set up, test and operate equipment in accordance with the acoustics of the area and select, place and adjust microphones
  • monitor audio signals to detect quality deviations or malfunctions
  • service, maintain and repair amplifiers, tuners, receivers, digital audio systems, turntables and pick-ups, reel-to-reel and cassette-type tape recorders, and speaker systems
  • build and install sound systems
  • dub and edit tapes
  • operate controls to maintain correct sound levels
  • talk with performers and instruct them on microphone use
  • introduce pre-recorded special effects required by scripts.

Sound technicians may work in radio, television and recording studios, theatres and other venues where live performances are staged. They may also work in wholesale and retail businesses trading in sound reproduction, recording and public address equipment. In some cases, they specialise in operating or maintaining sound equipment.

Sound technicians may be required to work shifts that involve long hours in the evenings and on weekends. They often work under difficult conditions and, with outdoor concerts, in variable weather.

Personal Requirements:

  • a good ear for detail in all areas of sound
  • aptitude for working with computers
  • able to work under pressure.

Employment, Apprenticeships and Traineeships (careers newsletter)

Important dates (Careers Newsletter)

Application deadlines for TAFE

Many courses at TAFE require an application.  Applications close at the end of October.  Note that this is BEFORE you find out your UAC results, so I strongly suggest that even if you intend to go to University and you are considering TAFE as a back up, you should apply on time.

Important UAC dates

Early August 2009 - Applications for Semester 1, 2010 open.

Towards the end of September 2009 - On-time applications close.

Apply-By-Web must be submitted by midnight on the relevant closing date.

Some University courses require additional selection criteria; this may include portfolios, interviews, evidence of extra curricular learning or early applications. I strongly suggest that if you are interested in going to university, that you start researching your course as soon as possible. This can be done by visiting the UAC website or by borrowing a UAC guide from me. You are also welcome to come and see me for advice.

2009 NSW HSC Result

October 2009 HSC written examinations commence.

December 2009 results available to students by internet, SMS and telephone.

December 2009 students receive HSC result summaries in the mail.

The School Calendar shows deadlines for work experience documents to be submitted to Mr. Mansell.  This deadline is firm; any documents submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.
