Careers NewsletterCareers Newsletter, T 2, week 9, 2010
Welcome to my careers newsletter. This issue has many scholarship opportunities. There
are far more opportunities out there. Most universities have scholarship opportunities. If
I have not advertised them here, go to the individual website and use the search engine
to look for scholarships, cadetships and internships.
Many scholarships require a very high academic achievement, but often there are
scholarships available to people who "get involved". The number one thing that these
scholarships require is charity and/or volunteer work. So get involved in any extra-curricular activity that you can and keep a diary. This may include
charity work, working for your local church or community, fund raising and any other activity that shows your willingness
to work above what is required by the school. If you are unsure what to do, please
come and see me for some advice. Scholarships are not as hard to attain as you might
think.
The UAC guides will be available in early August. As soon as they come in, I will have a
meeting with year 12 students and explain what you must do to apply for university. Not
all universities use UAC and some require direct application. I would suggest that you
start looking now. You can do this via the internet, or why not come and see me and I
can lend you brochures from most of the universities.

Many of you will own your own business one day or become managers of an existing
one. I would like to give you one piece of advice; tell your employees when they do
something right and praise them as often as possible. Believe me, you will get a lot more
out of them than if you only ever tell them when you want things done differently. Human
nature is such that the more we feel appreciated, the more we are prepared to go out of
our way to please, the less we feel appreciated, the less we feel like going beyond the
minimum. It is like this - imagine you are trying to lose some weight. If people start to
notice, it will encourage you to keep up the diet and even increase the exercise, if
someone tells you that you are fat during your diet, you will tend to feel like "what's
the point" and give up. So remember to always praise people and look for the positives.
You will get far greater rewards than looking for the negatives.
Please feel free to contact me any time if you have any questions. The best way is by
email at christopher.mansell@det.nsw.edu.au
Whilst care is taken to ensure the accuracy of this newsletter, please check the information with the relevant institution.

Bachelor of IT Co-operative Scholarship Program
Bachelor of Information Technology Cooperative Scholarship Program
Paid $14,500 a year to study, with the expectation of a great job and a first-year professional salary well above the average. It sounds good, doesn't it? It's true.
Graduates from this course are highly sought after and often find employment well before they graduate. This course fast tracks you into industry in only three years and has a track record of 100% employment for its graduates. Most go on to work with their sponsor organisations.
Students benefit from a course designed by UTS in conjunction with leading companies and gain exposure to real problems, learning alongside IT professionals. As well as a degree recognised by the Australian Computing Society, they have the experience of two industry placements with two separate sponsoring organisations.
For a detailed course program and further information on this course, please refer to the UTS Handbook entry. Information can also be found in our Bachelor of Information Technology Flyer 2011
The Scholarship
If your application is successful, you will receive around $14,500 during each year of your studies. This scholarship is funded by high profile industry partners, who may be your future employers. BInfTech graduates are first choice recruits for the sponsoring companies and other well-known organisations.
Can I Defer an Offer of Enrolment into this Course?
It is difficult to defer an offer of enrolment into the Bachelor of Information Technology course, because of our reliance on annual sponsor support to provide scholarships, industry semesters and other essential elements of the course. Unlike other courses, no guarantee can be made of how many sponsored student places will be available in future years.
But there is a way of effectively deferring an offer of enrolment into the Bachelor of Information Technology course. If you are considering taking a "gap year" before starting your university study, then you should apply for the Bachelor of Information Technology course in the year that you are finishing school and attend the interview if selected. If you subsequently decide to defer starting your university study for 12 months, you can request that your application and the report of your interview panel be re-considered as an application for the following year's intake. This would mean not having to attend an interview in November of the following year, when you may be overseas. This arrangement can only be made for those applicants whose application and performance at interview resulted in them being short-listed for an offer in the first place.
Other Co-operative Scholarship Programs at UTS
Did you know there is another co-op scholarship program at UTS? If you are interested in a career in accounting have a look at the UTS Bachelor of Accounting course.

Whether you're completing your HSC, studying a relevant course at university, or working in another field and considering a career change, a teaching scholarship will get you on your way.
This year, up to 300 scholarships are available for talented students to train as teachers in secondary maths, science or English, and in special education (K-12).
At least 80 of these scholarships are available exclusively for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students to train as teachers in primary or any secondary subject.

When you complete your studies, you are guaranteed permanent employment in a NSW public school in an agreed location and awarded a further $3,000 to assist with expenses such as relocation costs.
Over four years, the duration of most education degrees, you will receive $23,000 to spend as you wish.
As a teacher you are also eligible for the HECS-HELP benefit from the Commonwealth Government worth up to $1,558.50 per annum following graduation.
Scholarships can provide support for up to five years to complete an approved initial teacher education program at a NSW or ACT tertiary institution, or an initial teacher education program at an interstate tertiary institution that will lead to a qualification that meets the Department's and the NSW Institute of Teachers' academic requirements for employment as a teacher in NSW public schools.
Eligible applicants are Australian citizens or permanent residents who are:

- individuals who are no longer at school, already have a degree, or have industry experience and are intending to enrol in an initial teacher education program at a recognised Australian university.
During their final year of study, scholars will need to fulfil the Department's requirements under the Graduate Recruitment Program and apply for a Statement of Eligibility for accreditation as a new scheme teacher with the NSW Institute of Teachers.
Applications close on 8 October 2010.

Win a 3 Year Scholarship
Valued at $50,000
Create your own rebellion and you could win a three-year scholarship to Billy Blue College of Design worth $50,000
The Premise
Australia has always been the lucky country, and we the lucky people. Free to roam and do as we please in ways that other nations have never known.
What if that was threatened? What if that freedom was taken away bit by bit?
There are signs that it’s happening; we have the threat of mandatory internet censoring, sniffer dogs on the trains, identity cards, and CCTV. How would the early settlers of Australia feel about the new laws that have been put in place to protect us?
Imagine if it got worse? What if George Orwell’s vision of Big Brother was coming true, just 26 years later than he expected? Freedom of speech abolished, curfews after dark, obligatory body searches, thought crime? What would you do?
What if you started a rebellion?
What would it stand for?
What would it look like?
Entry is restricted to year 12 High School students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. Please note this fictional brief has been created solely for this project.
We award special prizes to talented Australian and international students throughout the years of study.
Talk to your career adviser or art teacher for more details, or feel free to contact us on 02 9492 3220 or email ebailey@billyblue.edu.au

CPA Australia has once again teamed up with Business Educators Australasia for the Plan
Your Own Enterprise competition.
Secondary students studying in Australia or New Zealand are invited to enter the competition
by completing a 3000 word plan on a creative idea for a small business.
Entries will close on Friday 3 September and students should include all the elements of a
good business plan, including information around staffing requirements, marketing and
financial information, and future prospects.
Business planning is an important element of business education and the competition will
provide students with greater in-depth appreciation of the business world and different
aspects of business operations.
‘The Plan Your Own Enterprise competition is a fantastic opportunity to involve students in a practical activity relating to planning a business. Students develop their thinking and planning skills. Students are encouraged to be both creative and responsible. The plan requires students to think, innovate and be entrepreneurial,’ says Gary Taylor, president Business Educators Australasia.
CPA Australia encourages all students to enter the competition and for teachers to involve their students in this highly rewarding educational activity.
For further information or to enter see me for a brochure.

Special Message for year 10 students (Careers Newsletter, T2, week 9, 2010)
Work experience
All year 10 students must complete a compulsory work experience during week 8, term 4.
That is; the 28th November to the 2nd December, 2010. The due date for all the documents
to be completed and returned to Mr. Mansell is Friday 3pm on the 12th November (as per calendar) . Documents submitted after this date will not be accepted and the student will be expected to attend school instead. Please start looking NOW as many places fill up well before that date. I would encourage you to apply for a placement in a business where you think
you will enjoy the week. Do NOT apply at the place you already do part-time work, do NOT
apply to work with family and please only apply for positions in the Northern Beaches/Sydney/Chatswood area.
