Leaves Term 3 Week 2 2008

PRINCIPALS REPORT

The Forest High School has had a busy and successful start to term 3. Staff Development Day was an outstanding opportunity to hear an insightful address by noted social researcher and academic Hugh McKay who spoke on generational change and the impact on education. The day was made more significant by the participation of primary schools from the Forest Community of Schools and members of the community.

Special mention and thanks needs to be given to our hard working P&C, especially Tracy Palmer and Christine Kaard. The Forest High School can only achieve success with a dedicated team. This year the P&C has been especially active in fund raising and the next event will be the trivia night.

Trivia Night

The trivia night will be held on Saturday 20th September at 7pm in the school hall.

Tickets are available at the cashier's office at $15 per person for tables of 8.

Examination Period

The Year 12 Trial HSC examination period commences on Monday August 4 and concludes on Friday August 15. All students need to be utilising a consistent study program to achieve the marks they deserve and overcome examination pressures. We wish Year 12 well in these important examinations.

CREATIVE & PERFORMING ARTS REPORT - JULY 2008

Our initial meeting for the new CAPA (Creative and Performing Arts) Community Support Group went very well, with reports given addressing the progress of our school’s extra curricular activities and the recent developments in our classrooms. We continue to encourage parents and community members to come along and show support, share ideas for future directions and simply meet more people with similar desires, to see our children succeed in their endeavours and enjoy themselves along the way.  Extra curricular activities include the very successful Band program, new programs for Show Choir and Dance and the school musical. Please don’t hesitate to contact Mr Laurie Cavill (Head Teacher CAPA) at school, if you have any enquiries regarding this or any CAPA matters.

Congratulations to 3 of our performing groups for their recent excellent performances while representing The Forest HS. The Wind Orchestra and Concert Band competed in the NSW SCHOOL BAND FESTIVAL (Grade 4) at the Sir John Clancy Auditorium University of NSW, Kensington, on Saturday 26th July, winning silver and bronze medals respectively. Many thanks to band director Jason Isaac, for his efforts and expertise in preparing the students, and for the parents who continue to support this valuable ensemble. Our year 10 drama students performed at the Sydney North Regional Drama Festival in the Parade Theatre, NIDA, on Thursday 24th July in the matinee show and again on Friday 25th July in the official night performance. Again, many thanks to drama teacher Kim Ahearn for spending so much of her time, both in and outside the classroom, developing and promoting this talent.  Well done to all those students!!

Our Year 12 Music Night, Wednesday 30th July,  was an entertaining evening of excellent standard, with a selection of HSC programs presented by many of our current year 12 students. Those parents and friends who braved the wintery conditions were particularly impressed by the overall quality of the performances. Thank you for continuing to support these evenings for our students.

Musical rehearsals have commenced with students from years 7-10. At this stage, Monday lunchtimes and one afternoon / evening (to be determined) every week are the regular times for all cast members. Mr Cavill has established an email distribution list for communication purposes. If your child is not receiving emails outlining information about these rehearsals, please contact Mr Cavill at school. The musical is “A Broadway Bungle” by Anna Magnan and is proving to be very entertaining indeed. Watch for more information about performance dates!!

We have recently engaged the services of dance teacher Sam Parkinson to continue the tutoring and development of our Junior Dance Ensemble. All students who have been part of this group, plus any new students from years 7 and 8, are encouraged to come along Tuesday afternoons and join in again for a very exciting term of dancing!!

MADD NIGHT

WEDNESDAY 27TH AUGUST

7PM SCHOOL HALL

Student Representative Council

The SRC have been keeping busy with organising various events around the school. Unfortunately our Term 2 Fundraiser and mufti day was cancelled due to students who constantly wear the wrong uniform, but we voted today at our weekly meeting to send a substantial donation to the Red Nose Day from our funds. This was the charity the mufti day would have supported.

Next we are supporting Jeans 4 Genes Day on Friday 1st August. W e will be selling merchandise and wearing our jeans in support of this worthwhile charity that assists in the research of childhood diseases.

Ryben – our school’s sponsor child – was not affected by the recent typhoon that hit The Philippines, and we are currently organising a small acknowledgement from the school for his upcoming birthday. The Forest has been supporting Ryben now for four years.

Our main focus for Term 3 will be our Mini Olympics, to be held on the afternoon of Friday 22nd August. We hope to get the whole school involved, as we did last year with the Multicultural Mini Fete. There will be a BBQ, plus plenty of fun activities.

Our six District SRC members will be attending a day long conference on leadership in late August. The guest speaker will be Glen Gerryn - a motivating presenter who spoke to our Year 12s earlier in the year.

SRC elections are coming up in Week 6 of this term. If you are interested in standing please see Ms Murray in the Library for information. Nomination forms will be available from Week 5, followed by interviews with Mr Molony and Year Advisors. It is a great experience, so please consider standing.

Year 11 vs Year 12 Football Challenge.

On the last day of term 2, Year 11 and Year 12 students braved the cold and rain to compete in the annual Bob Philpott Cup football games.

The girls played touch football first and both teams put up a great battle. Thanks to Kara we scored  and won the game 1 - 0. The year 11's played really well. Good luck next year.

The boys came next and we took the lead quickly but year 11 came back. The final score was 22 - 10 and we made up for last year and were victorious.

We would like to thank Mr Dowling for refereeing the girls game and Mr Mansell and MrCavill for coaching the boys and the rest of the school for cheering us on.

Mrs G.
