Careers Newsletter week 2 Term 3

Welcome to my careers newsletter for early term 3. I am going away on long service leave on the 21st August for the rest of this term. June Martinez will be taking my place for this time. I wish to take this opportunity to say all the best to our year 12 students. I love teaching the students at this school and can honestly say there is not one student who I dislike.  But in particular, I have really enjoyed interacting with this year's year 12 students over the last few years. I really hope they all do as well as they would like in their HSC and I will certainly be there for them even after they leave the school. They are welcome to come and see me any time for advice.

Most universities and colleges offer scholarships. I would like to encourage our students to apply for them, as I know many of our students have taken part in many extra-curricular activities and they have a good chance of gaining the scholarships. This issue has details of scholarships, but you shopuld visit all the websites of the universities and colleges you are interested in and search for scholarships and/or cadetships. Have a look at last years archived newsletters as well, there may be information there that is relevant this year.

Lastly, do the best you can- but if you fall short, don't panic or think that your life is over. Come and see me. If you REALLY want to do something, there is always a way, and I will be there to help you. At the end of the day, what really matters is how you see yourself, not how others see you.

2009 UNSW Minerals Summer School

UMSS Students at Ravensworth Opencut Mine (hq)

On 12th January, 2009, 16 high school students arrived at the School of Mining Engineering, at The University of New South Wales, ready to embark on a four day Summer School adventure, to find out about the Australian minerals industry and the many and diverse career and study opportunities available.

The students came from all parts of NSW, with a large number of students from rural areas.  The students were all selected from applications submitted in late 2008, and were either entering year 11 or year 12 in 2009.

The UNSW Minerals Summer School (UMSS) began with a day at the University, involving a walk around the campus, some talks about the industry and career options including mining engineering, geological, environmental and other exciting possibilities. The first afternoon was spent in small work groups in the rock testing and ventilation laboratories; and in the Virtual Reality Laboratory where students were each put through time trials on a load – haul – dump cycle for a large mine dump truck in a “virtual mine”.

At the end of the day, the UMSS group, with five accompanying leaders, set out for the Hunter Valley.  An underground visit to Xstrata Coal’s Ravensworth Mine to inspect both its opencut and underground operations, was a trip highlight.  The next night, staying in Pokolbin, the students were joined by six young recent graduates and three vacation work students (geology, mining and environmental) currently working in the industry, who provided enthusiastic and informative tales of their early careers and why they enjoy the industry and the career choices they have made.

The next day was a trip to Muswellbrook to visit one of the most modern and largest open cut mines in the Hunter Valley – Mt Arthur North, owned by BHP-Billiton.  Here the group saw some of the biggest haul trucks in the country, as well as gaining insights into the comprehensive community liaison and environmental management programs of the mine. The students also got access to their workshop where they got close to some of the biggest mining trucks.

The afternoon was spent at the Orica Mining Services Technical Centre at Kurri Kurri, where the group were treated to some great talks and videos of blast designs, simulations and actual blasts in a diverse range of mines from around the world.

The final day included a morning at Boral’s Peats Ridge basalt quarry to see some spectacular geological features of columnar basalt, as well as finding out about the differing demands and economics of the quarrying sector.

The final event was a lunch back at UNSW with a number of awards presented, and a certificate to all participants, before much swapping of emails and phone numbers, then back to parents, home, holidays and hopefully some good memories and a lot of thought about the new career options that they had learned about over the past four days.

Some of the feedback and comments from the UMSS student survey conducted on the final day were::

  • 100% of the students indicated that as a result of the trip they would definitely be considering a career in the minerals industry.
  • I had really a great time. I wish it was longer...I would highly recommend it.
  • Had a great time and learnt a lot about the coal industry .
  • I really enjoyed my time on UMSS. I learnt a lot about the mining industry - more than you could learn from research. I look forward to possible careers in the mining industry.
  • It made clear to me what mining engineering is all about.
  • Really enjoyed being at the mines.

UMSS is an independent initiative of the UNSW School of Mining Engineering.  The students contribute financially to attend, but UMSS is underwritten by our major sponsor, Xstrata Coal.  UNSW and the student participants all express their appreciation to Xstrata Coal and all of the host sites and personnel involved during the trip for their time and helpful support.

Meet your future at University of Newcastle Information Day

Tuesday 4 September 2007

Considering your future? Thinking about going to university?

The University of Newcastle is opening its doors for the annual Information Day at the Callaghan campus on Saturday 8 September 2007, giving potential students the chance to meet their future.

"The University of Newcastle is a place of opportunity and a great environment to study,"
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Kevin McConkey said.

"Whether you are in your final year of high school, changing career or furthering your education, our Information Day is a great opportunity to find out more about going to university.

"You can find out about full and part-time degree programs, discuss options face-to-face with staff and students, match your ambitions to our offerings, and gather all the information you need to make an informed choice about your future.

"If it is further university study you are interested in, staff will be on hand to talk about postgraduate options. It is also a great opportunity for TAFE students to find out how their studies can help them progress to university degrees."

Applications for admission into degree programs for 2010 close on Friday 28 September, and for the first time can only be made online via the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) website.

To assist with the new online entry requirements, the University will open its Student Hubs at the Callaghan campus on Information Day so people can apply on the day. Staff will be on hand to help with the application process.

Professor McConkey said Information Day aimed to help visitors get a feel for university life and will include course presentations, campus tours, interactive displays and live performances.

"Visitors can check out every corner of the University, including the lecture theatres, labs, on-campus accommodation, the library, art gallery, sporting facilities and much more.

"We're also holding presentations for parents, sessions about admissions and fees, and discussions on what first-year students can expect when they start their studies."

More information is available at www.meetyourfuture.com.au

Information Day will be held from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 8 September on the Callaghan Campus of the University of Newcastle. A further Information Day will be held on the Central Coast campus on Saturday 15 September from 10am to 3pm.

Photo opportunity: Saturday 8 September across the Callaghan campus. Please phone Blythe Hamilton, Media and Public Relations, on 0448 898 813.

UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA

Principal's Recommendation Scheme

The Principal's Recommendation Scheme is an early entry initiative. This scheme provides

current year 12 school or college students with an opportunity to secure an offer to the University during the UAC Early Round in December.

The University of Canberra recognises that an ATAR is not the best measure of a student's

ability or determination to succeed at University. If a school or college Principal recognises

that a student has the aptitude to go on to higher education, they can recommend that

student to the University for consideration. 115 ACT students accepted an offer to the

University through this initiative in December 2008 and commenced their studies in

Semester 1 2009. The University is now offering the Principal's Recommendation Scheme

to schools in NSW and across Australia. Last year applications were capped to 10 students

per school, however this cap has been lifted for 2009.

How to apply

Applications will be assessed on the strength of supporting information provided by the student's school, college or TAFE. An ATAR result is not required for entry via this initiative.

To apply students must indicate their University of Canberra course preferences on their UAC application. On-time UAC applications close on 30 September 2009. The recommendation form, signed by the student and the school, college or TAFE Principal must be returned to the University of Canberra Admissions Office by this date.

Forms and a letter explaining the initiative will be distributed to ACT/NSW schools during July 2009. To request application forms for your school please contact marketing@canberra.edu.au

Sydney College of the Arts Open Day

If you are interested in studying fine art, media art or object art and design, Sydney College of the Arts (SCA) will be open from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 30 August, 2008. Prospective students and members of the public are invited to visit the ceramics; glass; jewellery and object; film and digital art; photomedia; printmedia; painting; and sculpture, performance and installation studios and explore the study options available. There will be a wide variety of studio demonstrations, workshops, tours and a student art market. Ben Edols, an SCA graduate and one of the best glassblowers in Australia will be working in the glass studio all day.

There is plenty of on-site parking and mini-buses will make round trips from the Camperdown Campus to SCA in Rozelle.

SCA Galleries

Utility, part of Sydney Design 08, will showcase student work from the Object Art and Design area of Sydney College of the Arts. This year the students have been asked to consider the theme title "U-Beaut" and the idea of an Australian vernacular.

Fader, by Ryszard Dabek, is a video, image and sound installation that draws upon the abandoned utopian architectural projects and material detritus of Mid 20th Century Warsaw. Far from the gleaming surfaces of historically sanctioned “Modernity”, a confused and compromised model is evoked, haunted not only by the past but also by an uncertain future.

Experimental Ceramics Painting work by Mitsuo Shoji will also be on display.

Student Art Market

The student art market is a great opportunity to purchase artwork from emerging artists at an affordable price. There will be a wide range of glass, ceramic, jewellery, printmedia, painting, sculpture and media works for sale.

Yum! Restaurants Australia

School Based Traineeship – Certificate II Retail

2010 is fast approaching and Yum! Restaurants Australia P/L will again be offering Certificate II in Retail to school based part-time students who are employed at a local KFC or Pizza Hut restaurant.

The formal training component of the Retail traineeship is delivered by Yum! Restaurants Australia P/L and provides HSC unit credits (2 in Year 11 and 2 in Year 12).  The actual pattern of time spent at work will be negotiated between the employer and the student and will be structured to complement school organisation and other events. The student will be required to work a minimum of one shift per week (8 hrs) and it is expected that the traineeship will be 24 months long.  Those students undertaking a School Based Traineeship with Yum! Restaurants Australia, do not need to take time off school to undertake their training.  All training will be completed on-the-job, after school hours or on weekends/holidays.

As the Registered Training Organisation, Yum! Restaurants Australia P/L will deliver and assess the units of competency in accordance with the requirements for both the Certificate II in Retail and the Board of Studies courses from the Retail Curriculum Framework.  The NSW Department of Education and Training has established a contract with Yum! Restaurants Australia P/L that clearly articulates training and reporting requirements.

Yum! Restaurants Australia P/L will report on the trainee’s progress via the eBos on-line reporting system.

At Yum!, we pride ourselves on providing the opportunity for employees to build their know how through our comprehensive training and development programs.  We are proud of the on-the-job and life skills that we are able to teach the young generation of Australians we have within our organisation; skills that they are able to carry with them for life.

Traineeships are a vital part of our benchstrengh, with some 99% of our Restaurant Management Team being promoted internally within the business, beginning their careers as a team member in one of our KFC or Pizza Hut restaurants and progressing through to the position of Restaurant Manager.

We look forward to being able to offer this opportunity to your students.

If you have any questions regarding our School Based Traineeship, please do not hesitate to contact me.
