PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Year 10 into 11 Information Night

I wish to thank the teachers who attended our Year 10 Information night on Tuesday and gave their time to address the audience and answer questions for parents and Year 10 students. I also thank the parents for attending the event with their students. All prospective Year 11 students will be interviewed by the Careers Adviser and a member of the Senior Executive to ensure that they have carefully considered their pattern of study. Students need to ensure they have submitted their subject selections to the Deputy Principal, Mr. Molony.

Focus on CAPA

Year 10 Drama performance in Arts North - Our Regional Drama Festival was held at NIDA this week. This included a full dress technical rehearsal and two performances, giving our students not only an excellent opportunity to show how well they have developed as a performance group, but also the chance to see what other groups are doing in their drama classes. The script was developed and written jointly by teacher Mrs Ahearn and the students. Mrs Ahearn was on duty all week as Back Stage manager, assisting all groups with their rehearsals and working all performances. She was assisted by students from the drama class, as well as two from the Year 11 Entertainment Industry class.

HSC Drama / Music Performance Evening will be held Tuesday, 25th August at 7:00 pm in the PAC featuring all group and individual performances from these subjects, in preparation for their respective upcoming HSC performances. Parents are encouraged to come along and give support.

11 Entertainment Industry students will be running technical operations for the Wakehurst PS Showcase (TFHS Hall) on Wednesday evening, 26th August. This entails working with the teacher director of the show in the previous week, establishing all needs for the show, setting up lights, sound and staging, running the technical rehearsal and working the evening show.

Stage 5 Music Night Thursday 27th August will be held in the Common Room at 7:00 pm. This very popular evening of music features our elective classes from Years 9 and 10. The more intimate setting of the staff common room allows for a smaller audience to experience these items close at hand.

Focus on Sport
The Forest students have had great success in Athletics, with CHS Representatives selected from Years 7 to 12, four from Year 7, four from Year 8, four from Year 12 and one from Year 11.Three of our boys relay teams are also competing at CHS Athletics in early September. All teams have been trained by a parent from our school at the Academy of Sport. Students train weekly after school.  We also have students competing in the 100 and 200 m events and in the 4 x 400 m relay.

Principal

P&C MEETING

Dear Parents,

Our next P&C meeting is on Wednesday 19th August…that’s this one coming…from 7.30-9.30pm in the library.

I ask that you give great consideration to attending as we have a number of important issues to discuss, particularly in relation to the school grounds. Your input is both valued and appreciated.

It will also be a time to hear from our Principal, Rosemary McDowall, as she updates us on all that is happening within our wonderful school. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet her yet, then there’s another great reason to come along.

Hope to see you there!

Kind Regards

Pam O’Flaherty - President

YEAR 7 REPORT

I had the opportunity to check on the progress of every Year 7 student at the end of last term when I went through all the reports, reading comments and grades from every subject and it was quite an interesting experience.  There were many students, too many to list, whose efforts were outstanding and these students obviously have had no trouble adjusting to the very different demands of high school study. Their diligence must be commended - congratulations!

It was also clear that there is a small group of students who are experiencing difficulty coping with the homework and assignment workload.  It is ESSENTIAL that all students set up a regular study pattern for home. Whether or not structured homework has been set for a particular lesson, there is ALWAYS revision and consolidation to be done.  PROCRASTNATION is NEVER a friend! DO NOT leave assignments until the night before! Often you are given weeks of notice to do these plus constant reminders in class. PLAN your time – a large calendar is a good resource to have at home – write in the due dates for your assignments.

Effective Study Patterns.   It is not too early in Year 7 to start practicing these!

You - being committed to practicing, applying & rehearsing

Quite apart from reports, as part of The Forest’s commitment to anti-bullying, Year 7 attended a performance of “TechnoBully” which was a dramatic portrayal of the effects of cyber-bullying.  It was very entertaining and also very informative and thought-provoking. Students were given the opportunity to talk with the actors after the performance and hopefully left the hall with a greater understanding  of what cyber-bullying entails. Students can talk about any of these issues with the Deputy Principal, Mrs Dean, School Counsellor Mrs Grehan, Head of Welfare Mrs Ahearn or myself of course, at any time.

I look forward to a great Term 3!

So many parents have been telling me that they wish their kids could learn what I know, or that their kids would love our seminars. In fact hundreds of parents have asked me to help...so I am doing something about it!

I am very excited to announce my new seminar for teenagers to show them how I have achieved what I have and how they too can know who they are, what they want to achieve and exactly how to do it!

This is not really part of my business – it’s something that I am doing through my charity group, CFoundation, as the event is completely non-profit. We will be holding free education seminars for teenagers on the subject of life, goals, money, motivation, decision making and other crucial life skills. CFoundation is a registered charity organisation and our purpose is to empower lives and create positive change – and what better way than to educate our youth!

Helping teenagers work out how to live their absolute best life is something that is very close to my heart and something I can easily relate to having gone through that tough time myself :). Throughout this 90 minute free seminar I will go over my own story of how I overcame the challenges of being a teenager and how I got to where I am today. Having left school at the age of 12, I started working and faced many challenges both positive and negative however through my determination to succeed I lead an action packed, adventurous life path and the situations I came across have resulted in experiences and opportunities that have led me to where I am today; a self made millionaire, philanthropist, author, property developer and business owner but more than that – I’m happy, I know who I am and I really enjoy my life.

At this seminar your teenagers will learn:

• Find out how to maximize their own style and individuality
• Find out how to make a career out of the things they love to do
• How to not feel pressured and confidently make their own decisions
• Learn what it takes to get and keep a job
• Find out how to get motivated in life
• Find out how to make more friends with ease

This event aims to educate teenagers on the importance of setting goals and targets for their lives that will allow them to be successful. Motivation and determination are two of the main keys to success and it is important for teenagers to realise what they are good at and where their passion lies in order for them to take advantage of the many situations and opportunities that life throws at them.
