Principal's Report

Anzac Ceremony
I would like to thank Kevin Stapleton, Head Teacher HSIE and his faculty for organising
an impressive Anzac Ceremony. It was a solemn and moving ceremony that was well
received by the whole school. The students who spoke were excellent and all students
in the audience are to be congratulated on the respect they showed on the occasion.

High Resolves
The High Resolves program commences next week on Monday and Tuesday 3rd and
4th May. All of Year 8 will participate in the program, which “seeks to motivate students
to view themselves as purposeful global citizens and to acquire the mindsets and
capacities they will need to lead their communities and the world to a better future”.
We are extremely excited to be able to offer this enriching global citizenship program
to our students. For more information, parents can browse the High Resolves web site.

Winter Uniform
As the weather is turning cold, students are starting to wear winter uniform. Please
ensure that your child wears the correct uniform, including only school jumpers or blazers,
not other jumpers or sloppy joes. Girls may wear black tights or black opaque stockings
or regulation Forest green slacks. Boys may wear college mid-grey trousers. Coloured
tops may not be worn under the shirt. If students choose to wear scarves, they may only
be black or white. School shoes are black, leather enclosed shoes, not boots. Makeup
and bangles are not to be worn. The uniform can only be purchased from the School
Uniform Shop.

It is important that students wear the correct uniform at all times in order to ensure a safe
school environment. Uniform is one of the ways we ensure that there are no outsiders
on our school grounds. We are very appreciative of parental support in regards to uniform.

Junior Exams
Students are reminded that the junior exam period is coming up and they should be undertaking a regular program of home study and revision in preparation. As outlined
in the school’s Homework Policy, students in Years 7 and 8 should be studying one to
one and a half hours per night; Years 9 and 10, one and a half to two hours per night and
Years 11 and 12, three or more hours per night. Use of the school homework diary is
a must.

Students will achieve their academic “personal best” through planning, preparation and persistence.

Helping with homework
You can:

  • help your teenager with assignments, but don’t do the work for them as this
    doesn’t help them to learn
  • let the school know of any family situation that may interfere with homework
  • chat to your teenager’s tea cher if he or she is finding homework too hard
  • help your teenager to have a regular time each day to do their homework
  • help your teenager manage their time when they have lots of assignments
    at the same time
  • help your teenager research information on the internet by directing them to
    useful sites, such as
    www.tale.edu.au
  • encourage teenagers to re-read their writing to check for spelling and punctuation. Sometimes it’s easier to find ways to improve writing when it’s read aloud.
  • encourage and praise all of your teenager’s efforts.
