Special Message for year 10 students, careers newsletter term 3 week 2

School based traineeships and apprenticeships give you the opportunity to study, start your
career and get paid. They usually involve TAFE one afternoon per week, one paid day at work
and three and a half days at school. You can still gain an HSC, but not usually an ATAR (so if
you intend to go to university, this is probably not for you). If you are pretty sure you do not
want to go to university, you should consider a school based traineeship or apprenticeship.
There is an information session coming up on the 18th August; you must register an expression
of interest as soon as possible. Come and see me for an application form for the information
session (no obligation).

4.15 pm - 5.00 pm – first “taster” session

5.00 pm – 5.45 pm – second session; students may change courses for this period to “taste” a second course

The Premise

Australia has always been the lucky country, and we the lucky people, free to roam and do as we please in ways that other nations have never known.

What if that was threatened? What if that freedom was taken away bit by bit?

There are signs that it’s happening; we have the threat of mandatory internet censoring, sniffer dogs on the trains, identity cards, and CCTV. How would the early settlers of Australia feel about the new laws that have been put in place to protect us?

Imagine if it got worse? What if George Orwell’s vision of Big Brother was coming true, just 26 years later than he expected? Freedom of speech abolished, curfews after dark, obligatory body searches, thought crime? What would you do?

What if you started a rebellion?

What would it stand for?

What would it look like?

Entry is restricted to Year 12 High School students who are Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia. Please note this fictional brief has been created solely for this project.

Rural trainees may work in a variety of livestock industries. During their training they accumulate many valuable farm skills. With further experience graduates often take up positions of management.

Course components

Each year of part time study at Tocal leads to a separate, nationally accredited qualification.
The Diploma in Agriculture can also be studied externally.

Training includes use of the College farms, visits to commercial farms in NSW and uses the experience of industry professionals and mentors whenever possible. A self funded tour of NZ is made every three years and is available to all trainees enrolled between trips.
