MADD Night (Music, Art, Dance and Drama)
Last Wednesday evening I experienced my first MADD night. The Year 12 HSC Artworks were on display and this was followed by music, dance and drama performances. The standard of work produced by our students is outstanding. I was particularly impressed with the performance of our band. The band is set to go on a tour of rural NSW in Term 4 and the practice and preparation they are putting into their performances was obvious. It is always a pleasure to see the students perform and I thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
International Guest Speaker Years 10 and 11
Recently Year 10 and Year 11 students attended a guest lecture by Azim Khamisa, a renowned author, inspirational speaker and activist committed to halting violence among youth. Azim’s only son, Tariq was killed by a 14 year old gang member in the USA in 1995. Azim was inspired to transform his loss into forgiveness and he founded the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to break the cycle of youth violence.
The students found Azim’s message inspiring and Azim kindly donated his books and DVD for students to learn more about his foundation. He has also committed to visit the school in the future when he comes to Australia next year. Year 10 and 11 teachers are continuing to discuss the issues Azim raised and consider what role individuals can play in raising community awareness.
