Principal's Report

Forest Learning Community Launch
This week saw the launch of our Forest Learning Community of schools. The community is composed of The Forest High School, Allambie Heights, Beacon Hill, Frenchs Forest and Seaforth Public Schools and two specialist schools, Arranounbai and The Beach School. The launch was held at the Harbord Diggers Club on Tuesday night and was well attended by Executive and teachers from the schools, local community members, the Regional Director and School Education Director, Regional consultants and representatives from local clubs, businesses, organisations and agencies. The night was an enormous success and source of pride for all the schools involved. Although a number of key people were involved in planning the launch, I would like to particularly thank Shane Molony, Deputy Principal from our school for his tireless work on this project. I would also like to thank the students from our Hospitality class who contributed to the evening.

Reminder for School Development Day
Parents are invited to attend our Term 3 Development Day on Monday, 27th July starting at 8:30 am in our school hall. The first part of the day will be attended by teachers from the Forest Learning Community. Parents should let me know if they wish to attend as this will assist with planning and catering for the day.  Please rsvo to the office.

Homework help online
Parents and carers can access age-appropriate material to help with your child’s homework assignments at the Teaching and Learning Exchange: www.tale.edu.au/tale/live/index.jsp

Information ranges from ages 4-9 which includes pages to help you follow your child’s early learning and to help you talk with teachers about your child’s progress to Beyond School, which includes links to TAFE, university and other further learning opportunities such as apprenticeships and traineeships.
The content of each age group area is organised into these sections:

  • What they learn
  • Helping your child learn
  • About stages of learning

From the navigation bar you can also access links to educational organisations and news.

The site also includes a Jargon Buster, a selection of translated documents and links to DET parent newsletters such as the Click! technology guide and School Parent’s magazine.

Education Tax Refund – Don't forget to claim
How do I claim the Education Tax Refund?

  • In your tax return.
  • If you don't lodge a tax return, claim on a separate form or over the phone.
  • If you use a tax agent, make sure you ask them to claim for you.

The Education Tax Refund lets you claim up to 50% of eligible education expenses for school children. If you are eligible, you can get back up to $375 for each primary student and up to $750 for each secondary student. You can claim things like text books, stationery and even internet costs.

If you receive Family Tax Benefit Part A for a child at primary or secondary school, you will be eligible. Some other people are eligible too, to find out more about this and other information such as what you can and can't claim go to australia.gov.au/educationtaxrefund or call the Tax Office on 13 28 61.
Remember, you need to keep all receipts for expenses you claim.

Student Representative Council

Term 2 has been a busy time for the SRC, apart from our usual weekly activities of meetings, assembly and organisation of school activities such as mufti day supporting Red Nose Day we have implemented a new event which we hope will become a regular occurrence. An Entertainment Morning was held for the War Veterans Village, Collaroy  and  despite a slight hiccup of our bus arriving late to collect our guests the morning was filled with some of our talented students performing. The performance was followed by a morning tea where the SRC and performers were able to talk with our guests - some of senior students charming the gentlemen! We have been invited to bring the performance down to the Village so as more of the residents will be able to attend, hopefully this will happen next Term.

The final weeks of Term see us planning the Multicultural Fete for Thursday 9th July. We look forward to the whole school supporting this event and making it as successful as the inaugral Day in 2007.
