Phone 9451 5111 Fax 9975 3293 www.theforest-h.schools.nsw.edu.au Careers Newsletter - Term 3 Week 3, 2008

Welcome to the first newsletter for term 3, 2008 (careers newsletter)

Welcome to my careers newsletter. This issue contains a great deal of information about scholarships and open days as well as university, TAFE and private college information. There are even some jobs. For our year 12 students who will be leaving us at the end of this year, I would suggest you start looking at what you want to do after you finish the HSC.  Open days are an essential part of the decision process. For our year 10 students, it is also wise to go along to some open days, so that you may start preparing yourself for further education. Many of the more popular courses are becoming increasingly competitive; some require much more than just high marks. Many require portfolios and/or extra-curricular evidence of your interest in the subject.  Now is the best time to find this out.

I encourage all students to watch for new newsletters, especially this term. I also encourage you to do your own research as although I endeavour to get as much information into the newsletter that I think will interest you, I cannot fit all the information that may apply to you and it is by no means difinitive. Students should feel free to see me any time.  Parents are also welcome to make an apointment to see me, however I am more than happy to answer questions via email. I can be contacted on christopher.mansell@education.nsw.gov.au or telephone the school on 94515111.

One more thing.  Although it is important to do your best at school and so that you have the most opportunities that are possible, it is important to remember that it is not the end of the world if you cannot get into the area of study or work that you desire straight away. Some people find it very hard to study and those of us who do, should be aware that everyone has their own special skills. I hate it when I hear people say they are not smart, or that they are dumb. There is no such thing as smart or dumb. You all have your own special skill. The American Indians believe that to be smart one must have good luck and good manners. If smartness was measured by ones artistic ability I would be the dumbest person on the Northern Beaches. So from now on, if you have ever considered yourself to be dumb, you are not - in fact you are probably the smartest student in the school in some way or other. Have a look at the following picture, it may give you a new perspective on things. This is what study is like for some people.

TAFE, TVET and School Based Traineeships (careers newsletter)

A school based traineeship allows a student to obtain their Higher School Certificate whilst undertaking a TAFE course and on the job training. It is possible to get paid for one day out of school, go to TAFE one afternoon and come to school for the other three and a half days. You will leave school with an HSC, a certificate from TAFE and some of your apprenticeship or traineeship completed (usually the first year). If you are interested in Automotive, Beauty, Business, Plumbing, Retail, Tourism, Aged Care, Electrotechnology, horticulture, sport and rec', warehousing, landscaping, spraypainting, prperty and much more, you should attend an information session at Checkers Conferance Centre 331 Mona Vale Road, Terry Hills from 6pm to 7.30pm (5.30 for tea and coffee) For more information come and see me or have a look at www.sbatinnsw.info

Application to the Enmore Design College is very competitive. The college is widely recognised as a leader in the field of design. It may be even harder to get into the college than university. The college has prepared a power point presentation that explains the courses offered and gives valuable information on what to do to get into the college. Entry is not dependant on your UAI, but is dependant on portfolio and evidence of desire to complete the course. The college also offers TVET courses, and whilst it would obviously be difficult to get to the College while completing the HSC, it would give you a head start for consideration once you leave school. Come and see me if you are strongly considering a course at the college. To see the power point, go to the following link, click on the Enmore Prez.080723.ppt document as well as the Design Careers document to see what careers you can get started through the Design Centre.  http://northernsydneyvet.wikispaces.com/Careers+Advisers

Also in TAFE news; Many TAFE courses require an application. The courses that require application are generally the more popular courses and therefore there is more competition for places. Have a look at the TAFE application procedure powerpoint. Go to the link above and then click on TAFE high demand courses ppt. Course application close 31 October at 4pm 2008 for 2009 courses. Pay particular attention to the compulsory information section. Be aware that the application deadline is before you get your UAI results.

SO YOU WANT A CAREER IN PERFORMING ARTS?

If you’re looking for an exciting, intensive and demanding degree course in either Acting or Music Theatre, the University of Ballarat’s Arts Academy may be the place for you. Our students come to us from all over Australia - and beyond - to enjoy the dizzying blend of intense, passionate learning in a small, close-knit and supportive communal teaching environment.

A short train ride from the Melbourne CBD, the Arts Academy - based near the heart of Ballarat - is part of a vibrant and rich cultural environment deep within the city’s Arts Precinct. Courses are stimulating and specifically designed around the studio model of learning - where staff/student ratios are low and high-level individualised feedback high. Our courses are aimed at the training professional performer, each class working to develop skills to a professional level. You’ll learn, through carefully graded exercises the requisite skills of the working performer: voice, singing, acting, dance, movement, Feldenkrais and Alexander Technique; as well as theory based subjects. Our team of full-time Lecturers, each dedicated and respected professional teachers and directors, are augmented by a raft of visiting guest directors and professional artists currently working within the industry.

Recent productions at the Arts Academy include Kiss Me Kate, 42nd Street, Into the Woods, Antipodes and a tour to London of The City Wit. Recent Third Year seasons include Melbourne’s Princess Theatre and Theatreworks. Upcoming productions include Spring Awakening, Cabaret, and Once Upon a Mattress. A vast and rapidly increasing number of recent graduates are working successfully at the highest levels of our industry, both here and abroad, in productions as diverse as Wicked, Guys and Dolls, High School Musical, Spamalot, Damn Yankees, Cats, Singapore, Disney Tokyo, Universal Studios Osaka and Steven Speilberg’s new film The Pacific – evidence of the growing reputation the Academy is gaining.

Our graduates are also forging successful professional careers in fields as diverse as teaching, directing, choreography, production, television, speech pathology, event management and the law.

Word is out about us and we’re looking for new students. We’ve opened up our auditions to cover centres across Australia and New Zealand. We’ll be auditioning for our new intake towards the end of 2008 in MELBOURNE, SYDNEY, BRISBANE, ADELAIDE, PERTH, WELLINGTON and BALLARAT. If you think we sound like the kind of place you’d like to study, keep an eye out for notice of applications and auditions in newspapers and Arts journals, or simply contact us whenever you want on the web. Have a look at http://www.ballarat.edu.au/
