Principal's Report
GET WELL SOON
We all wish Todd (Year 7) and his family well after his accident last Thursday afternoon. On behalf of our broad school community, the SRC has sent a wonderful 'get well' card, a gift and flowers to help speed his full recovery. No visitors please; Todd needs plenty of rest and his family will let us know when he is more robust.
As I said to students on the Wednesday assembly, the lesson regarding the wearing of bike helmets could not be clearer and Todd is a very positive role model in this regard.
Major Events
Your P&C is a particularly hard-working body with plenty of energy and they need the support of everyone for the following events...
GROUNDS WORKING PARTY on Saturday 6 September. Can you give some time to pruning, clearing, general gardening etc.? 8am to 1pm.
TRIVIA NIGHT on Saturday 20 September (7pm sharp). This will be huge with over $10 000 in prizes and auctions. Flyers have been given to all students and put in letterboxes plus there is a link on our webpage.
This is an 'adult' Trivia Night with appropriate questions, although Year 12 students have been invited.
Phone the school to book a table of 8 OR the organisers can organise for you to join a table with other people.
2009 Students
We aim to put 5 classes into Year 7 in 2009 but some Year 6 students still seem to be deciding on a High School placement. If you know of anyone in that position, please encourage them to contact the school asap as we may have to close the school to non-local enrolments. On average, I am determined to keep our Year 7 classes relatively small.
Mr Peter Gillam - Principal.
YEAR 8 INTO YEAR 9 PARENT INFORMATION NIGHT
All parents of Year 8 are invited to an information evening in the School Library on Tuesday 2nd September at 7.00pm, when the elective subjects that the students may study next year, will be discussed.
HSC LECTURE SERIES
Inside Break HSC Lecture Series & Website
Manly, Pittwater and Warringah Councils have joined forces to help local students prepare for their upcoming Higher School Certificate exams by running a series of free lectures called Inside Break.
During the lectures, leading experts, university lecturers, secondary school teachers and senior exam markers will provide information and study tips for key subjects and topics, and students will have the chance to participate in group discussion and ask questions.
A range of HSC subjects and topics will be covered, including English (with examination of some key texts, and aspects of The Journey), writing for the HSC, Biology, Legal Studies, 2 Unit Maths (with a focus on past exam papers questions), Business Studies, Drama and Ancient and Modern History.
The companion Inside Break website at www.insidebreak.org.au is aimed at giving local students an extra edge with their HSC studies. The site offers links to Homework Help, an HSC student blog, information on library resources, RSS feeds and news updates.
HSC can be a time of stress for many students and parents, but Inside Break can help alleviate this stress by giving local students some valuable guidance and help.
The lecture series will be held from 4 September to 30 October at a number of library locations. All lectures are free and bookings are essential for all lectures. Enquires and bookings: Manly Library - 9976 1731, Mona Vale Library - 9970 1600 and Warringah Mall Library - 9942 7999.

CREATIVE and PERFORMING ARTS NEWS
AUGUST 2008
Our initial meeting for the proposed Japanese Tour for our bands was both well attended and well informed, thanks to the research and experience of Jason Isaac. Please don’t hesitate to contact the school if you have any questions regarding this exciting initiative. It is also hoped that we have a Drama contingent go along, for curriculum studies, so stay tuned!!
Congratulations to our year 12 Drama students for an entertaining evening on Tuesday 19th August, previewing their performance works for the HSC. They are being examined on Tuesday 26th August, so our thoughts go out to them and Mrs Ahearn, who continues to spend many hours guiding individuals in finalising their pieces. The year 11 Drama group also produced a wonderful night on Thursday 21st August, presenting a play they have been developing in class. Well done to all those students!!
Congratulations, also, to those Entertainment Industry students who continue to work behind the scenes to help produce events from both our own school, and those from our community. Many hours of preparation, including communicating with our clients, setting up, operating the technical support and pulling down the shows, go into their work and they are maintaining a high standard for all to see!
Our Year 9 and 10 Music Night, Thursday 14th August, was an entertaining evening of high standard, with a selection of performance pieces presented by many of our students. Those parents and friends who braved the wintery conditions were rewarded by the overall quality of the performances. Thank you for continuing to support these evenings for our students.
Musical rehearsals continue as scheduled with students from years 7-10. This week, Monday lunchtime and Wednesday afternoon / evening was a busy time for our cast members. Mrs Ahearn is leading script reading, before starting to block entire scenes, Ms Parkinson (dance tutor) is driving our dancers and also working with individual cast members on movement in songs, while Mr Cavill and Mr Simon Matthews (visiting practicum teacher) is developing the singing items. In these early stages it promises to be an exciting event indeed!
Don’t forget to come along and see our most outstanding items from our curriculum and extra curricular areas in the Creative and Performing Arts on our upcoming Music, Art, Dance and Drama evening….
